| Public Lives ‘The Rats Will Not Win,’ Chief Varmint Hunter Vows
Actually, when it comes to food safety, rats are not our biggest concern, but they do cause a more violent reaction: nobody wants to eat in a place with rodents running around. While the rats were pursuing video stardom, Mr. Marcus, a father of four daughters and grandfather of six, was vacationing in Jamaica with his wife, Jackie, a fifth-grade teacher. He returned on Sunday and instantly got down to the dual business of external damage control and internal knuckle-rapping. The errant inspectors supervisor was chided for not requesting a full inspection after signs of rat activity were confirmed. Which didnt require a magnifying glass. Rats, Mr. Marcus notes, are notorious for not cleaning up after themselves: Theyre terrible that way, just like men. Mr.
Young chefs ‘cook off’
Heats have taken place in 15 schools with students from Key Stage 3 (Year 7-9) and Key Stage 4-5 (Year 10-12) being challenged to design and cook an original and imaginative meal incorporating five basic ingredients supplied by 3663. The ingredients were parsnip, potato, cabbage, thyme and vanilla. The final will be held at Thames Valley University, formerly Reading College, Crescent Road campus with a panel of professional judges from diferent areas of the catering industry watching closely. This year's judges are Marco Pierre White, Tom Aikens and Ashley Palmer-Watts, Heston Blumenthal's head chef at The Fat Duck in Bray, David Cavalier, food innovation director of Charlton House and Colin Robson-Wright from The New Mill restaurant. How to Snag that Crib
It's March. That means mid terms, spring break budget woes, and a senioritis that seems to hit everyone once the weaather is decent. But perhaps most nagging of all is the search for a first college home out of the dorms. How to Snag that Perfect Crib- Guidelines for rent, roommates, location. 1) Remember your budget Freshmen; ever miss that movie because you just couldn't throw down that $10 bill? Well, that's only going to get worse. Dorm life forced two deadlines for huge chunks of cash - the beginning of each semester. But after the aneurism those two bills caused you, you are pretty much clear from any money-related heart attacks. Life off campus, however, means anywhere from slight to significant pain at least every month. And the first of the month is a quick punch in the stomach that really blindsides you.
Riverbank's new Thai infusion
With the opening of Siam Fine Thai Cuisine in September, Wayne Luong completed a perfect Asian trifecta. Luong is a strong advocate for city business and dining, and this hip, upscale Thai venue on the west bank of the Genesee is a fine complement to his already successful tandem East End sushi and dim sum complex. Tucked into the left rear corner of the new Corn Hill Landing complex, it takes a bit of digging to unearth this gem. What you will find is three levels of bright but minimalist dining, with a bright but minimalist menu. THE FOOD The menu here is not as extensive as some Thai restaurants. There are about a dozen entres, but each can be varied by the additions of beef, chicken, shrimp, squid or tofu. While the selection may be limited, quality is not. As an example, jumbo shrimp were used in our entre as opposed to the medium variety used in many places.
Firefighters turn up heat with tasty, low-cal food
Akron Fire Capt. Jim Case held up a thin slice of apple and winced. ``You can't dip this in ketchup. We used to have french fries around here.'' The lunch table at Akron Fire Station No. 2 has undergone some radical changes in the past few months. Gone are the fries, the bread, the pasta. In are broccoli, cauliflower, and yes, plates of sliced apples. ``They're killing me,'' Case teased. I had the chance last week to spend some time at Station 2 with members of the crew who are taking part in the 911 Fitness Challenge, a 12-week national weight loss and fitness challenge for emergency response workers. As we say goodbye to American Heart Month in February, and welcome National Nutrition Month in March, it seemed like the right time to visit with some people who are trying to lose weight and build up their muscle mass.
