Will green tech become the valley's new bubble?

Silicon Valley's shift toward green technology is in high gear. Will it create the same kind of bubble, bust and lasting change as the Internet itself? Are we going to party like it's 1999? Will we hear venture capitalists like John Doerr describe ``green tech'' the way they did the Internet boom in the 1990s as the ``largest legal creation of wealth in human history''?

I don't think we're in danger of going over the edge into a bust just yet. It's so early, and the bubble warning signs just aren't there. For instance, we don't have any 50-person green tech start-ups valued at $10 billion yet.

But the velocity of news about clean tech is certainly accelerating. Clean coal is going to get a boost with the proposed $45 billion buyout of Texas utility TXU, funded in part by San Francisco's Texas Pacific Group.

Plant-Derived Omega-3s May Benefit Bone Health

27/02/07 Plant-based omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) may have a protective effect on bone health, according to a team of Penn State researchers who carried out the first controlled diet study of these fatty acids contained in such foods as flaxseed and walnuts.

Normally, most of the omega-3 fatty acids in the diet are plant-derived and come mainly from soybean and canola oil. Other sources are flaxseed, flaxseed oil, walnuts and walnut oil. Smaller amounts also come from marine sources, mainly fish, but also algae. Omega-3s are thought to have an anti-inflammatory effect and may play an important part in heart and bone health.

"The unique thing about this study is that we know exactly what the participants ate because we closely controlled their food," says Dr. Rebecca Corwin, associate professor of nutrition.

VAT increase costs seven billion Euros to German companies

According to estimates by economists of the Deutschen Postbank the VAT increase will cost German companies about seven billion Euros in 2007 which is about 1% of the total amount of corporate earnings and unearned income in 2006. However, thanks to vibrant business activity the economy can easily cope with this, think the experts of the Deutsche Postbank.

"Corporate earnings will increase strongly in 2007″, forecasts Dr. Marco Bargel, chief economist of the Bonner Bank. Furthermore, increased VAT does not burden all companies in the same way. Almost half of all the products and services consumed in Germany are exempt from VAT or a reduced tax rate is applied as in for instance the case in book trade, for food stuffs and in public local traffic. Here things have remained virtually unchanged.

Hepatitis A Case in Worker at Wolfgang Puck Catering

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has been alerted that an employee at the Wolfgang Puck Catering facility in Hollywood has been diagnosed with acute hepatitis A. Public Health is investigating the situation and is working closely with the management of Wolfgang Puck Catering to determine which patrons may be at risk.

PLEASE NOTE: No restaurants or Express Cafes owned and operated by Wolfgang Puck or Wolfgang Puck pre-packaged foods are affected by this situation and restaurant patrons are not at risk.

Event hosts and the Department of Public Health are contacting attendees who ate uncooked food provided at four events that occurred between February 14 and February 20. These are within the 14 day window for administration of immune globulin (IG) to prevent illness, and it is recommended that these individuals receive this prophylactic medication, although the risk to any individual is quite low.
