In defense of fast-food jobs

I THOUGHT it was important to wait and see the real thing before having an opinion. I realize this method of actually witnessing something before reacting to it is extremely un-American, and I'm hoping you won't hold that against me.

But -- now that I've seen it -- boy, am I mad.

As a former fast-food worker (Pleasanton Round Table, class of '87) I was outraged and sickened by the Kevin Federline ad during the Super Bowl. You know, the one where ex-Mr. Britney Spears sits dreaming he's in a rap video full of hot women, bling, flying cash and big performances instead of having to man the fry vat. (See it at www. http://www.nationwide.com/nw/featured-ads/index.htm?hpAdClick=teaser.)

Never mind that he really will be manning one within a year; that's not the point.

Kraft Hopes to Take a Bite of Take-Out and HJ Heinz’s Earnings Preview

City of Industry, CA --(www.FinancialNewsUSA.com)-- 02/27/2007 - Consumer Goods industry news provided by Financial News USA (OTC: FNWU). Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE:KFT), looking for a way to end a prolonged sales slump, is trying to take a bite out of its real competition -- restaurants. As the world's second largest food and Beverage Company, Kraft Foods has pioneered everything from sliced processed cheese to packaged stuffing. But as more families forego the time-honored yet time-consuming homemade dinner for the ease and convenience of take-out, Kraft and other food companies have struggled to stay on the forefront of consumers' tastes. PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE:PEP) reaffirmed on Thursday its 2007 earnings forecast of at least $3.30 per share. The company also said it still expects mid-single digit growth in net revenue and volume, according to a filing with the U.S.

Up on the catwalk

Retail buying is perceived as the glamorous end of the purchasing profession. Charlotte Dennis-Jones assesses the differences with not-for-resale procurement When you tell new acquaintances you are a buyer, they probably have visions of fashion buying. For whatever reason, the outsider's perception of professional procurement rarely extends beyond retail in general and clothing in particular. To the casual observer, retail buyers' roles appear to involve extensive travel to exotic corners of the world. These breathless jaunts, the view goes, include fashion shows, researching trends and sourcing the best products at the best price. How difficult can it be? In reality, the job demands an unusual combination of creativity and astute business skills. What's more, retail purchasers are vital to the success of some of the most powerful businesses in the world.

Oldways brings wisdom to the kitchen table BOOKS FOR COOKS

It would be folly to describe The Oldways Table (10 Speed Press, $32.50) by K. Dun Gifford and Sara Baer-Sinnott as just another cookbook.

Certainly there are recipes in this provocative book — for dishes as eclectic as New Hampshire Autumn Zucchini Bread, Broiled Salmon Fillets with Soy and Brown Sugar Glaze, Momo's Pork Osso Buco, Vermont Butter Cookies and Baba Limoncello with Lemon Cream.

But The Oldways Table is a thinking chef's cookbook that abides by the mission of Oldways, a culinary think tank that promotes a philosophy of sustainable agriculture, traditional foods and healthy eating, drinking and exercising.

Ninety essays by Gifford and scores of culinary luminaries are interspersed among recipes. Read essays written by Nancy Harmon Jenkins ("How and Why to Cook With Olive Oil"), Bill Niman ("Niman Ranch Pork") and Deborah Madison ("The Farmers' Market and Its Web of Connection").

Ugandan President and MTC Managing Director discuss the way forward

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently held a comprehensive meeting with MTC Group Managing Director Dr Saad Al Barrak in Kampala discussing a range of issues that covered the liberalization of the telecommunications industry; investment opportunities; incentives for foreign investment and recent free trade agreements that have been recently established in Uganda. President Museveni pointed out that such issues are relevant to the future economic prosperity of Uganda, and in return Dr Barrak provided assurances to the President of the commitment and role that MTCs fully owned subsidiary Celtel Uganda will play in such an important arena.

Also present in these momentous discussions were the Minister of ICT, Dr Ham-Mukasa Mulira; the Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Professor Semakula Kiwanuka and several MTC Group senior executives.
