Keeping the food and drink moving

In the restaurant business, timing is everything. Things can go sour for patrons if they aren't seated quickly enough, or if the staff are slow to deliver food and drinks.

Timeliness is equally critical when it comes to restaurants' take-out operations. For BigHoller, that means network bottlenecks can't be tolerated.

BigHoller, based in New Jersey, operates an online food order service for more than 1000 restaurants in North and South America. The company hosts a Web site for each of its clients where patrons can place food orders. BigHoller also can integrate its ordering service into a restaurant's existing Web site.

As online orders are placed, BigHoller routes them to the restaurants, which can opt to receive their customers' orders via fax, e-mail or integration with their point-of-sale systems.

India’s budget farm friendly, but problems remain

NEW DELHI - Indias federal budget this week doled out gifts aimed at giving a major boost to the ailing farm sector but failed to lay the ground for rural renewal capable of tackling supply shortages and crippling debt.

Large sums were earmarked for credit and to develop better seeds, but analysts said the budget on Wednesday would fail to release millions of farmers from poverty by raising farm productivity and better connecting producers to consumers.

The budget expanded loans to an extra 5 million farmers and raised the credit on offer by 18 percent to 2.25 trillion rupees ($50.8 billion). It aimed to irrigate an additional 2.4 million hectares of land and increased fertiliser subsidies.

Analysts said while the government recognised the sector -- which puts food on the tables of 115 million farming families -- is in distress, and acknowledged problems in the supply of foods like wheat and oilseeds, the measures just rehashed old ideas.

Royale With Cheese: Prince Charles Slams McDonalds

While billions served may not care necessarily about the detrimental effects of scarfing down a Big Mac, Prince Charles thinks differently and is convinced the food chain should be shut down for good. Attending the launch of a public health awareness campaign to fight diabetes in the United Arab Emirates, Charles spoke to nutritionist Nadine Tayara and said, "Have you got anywhere with McDonald's, have you tried getting it banned? That's the key."

The debate concerning the American food chain's impact on obesity around the world has long been a standing issue. There have been lawsuits filed, documentaries made, protests, and warnings from nutritionists. Some people in the medical field believe eating at fast food chains — even once a month — can have damaging health consequences.

Recipe: Basic Pie Pastry

1. Sift together the flours, sugar and salt. Put into a bowl or food processor. Add the pieces of shortening and butter; cut in by hand or use the pulse butter on the processor until large flakes are formed. Add cold water and work just until the dough begins to hold together. Transfer to a sheet of plastic wrap and form dough into a flat disk. Refrigerate at least an hour or overnight.

2. Lightly spray a 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray and set aside. If dough has been refrigerated overnight, remove about 30 minutes before rolling.

3. Roll dough between lightly floured sheets of plastic wrap to a 14-inch circle. Remove top sheet of plastic and invert dough over pie pan. Use plastic to mold dough into the pan, then remove and discard. Crimp top edge of dough and chill until ready to fill.

CDEP: TV-Watching Toddlers May Fatten into High-Density Waddlers

ORLANDO, March 2 -- Three-year-olds pack away 46 calories, mostly in sugar-laden snacks and drinks, for every hour they spend watching television, researchers here reported. This can add up.

Typically toddlers watching television -- either TV programs or videos -- are consuming extra servings of fruit juice or cookies and at the same time consuming less healthy foods such as vegetables and fresh fruit, and said Sonia Miller, a Harvard Medical School student. .

Food safety budget leaves a bad taste

In just the first two months of 2007, more than two dozen food safety alerts have been issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. One of those warnings, about peanut butter contaminated with salmonella that has sickened more than 300 people, got wide media attention. Others slipped by with little publicity, including: California cantaloupes (salmonella); processed green bean casserole (Listeria); egg-free pasta (containing eggs, a problem if you're allergic); Little Debbie Nutty Bars (metal particles); imported herring (uneviscerated, posing botulism risk). Or this one, Earth's Best Organic 2 Apple Peach Barley Wholesome Breakfast Baby Food. Neither wholesome nor fit for babies, it could cause botulism, the FDA warned.

While that partial list is admittedly unappetizing (details and other warnings available at www.fda.gov), it illustrates a growing problem with the safety of our food.
