Getting New Food Guide as Easy as Going to Store

In an effort to help the residents of Middlesex-London better plan nutritious meals and eat healthy foods, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is making it easy to get a copy of Canada's new food guide. The Heath Unit has obtained 60,000 copies of Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide, and is making the booklets available at supermarkets across the county and the city.

"The new food guide is a very useful tool when it comes to planning nutritious meals and ensuring that you get the nutrients you need to be healthy," says Heather Thomas, Public Health Dietitian with the Middlesex-London Health Unit. "We felt it was important to find a simple way to get this booklet into as many hands as possible - making it available when you're stocking up on groceries was a natural fit."

Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide is also available for download on Health Canada's website or by calling 1-800-O-Canada.

When a skunk stamps its feet, it's time to run

Victoria Weber's French bulldog, Oscar, has been nosing around in the wrong places. In the last couple of months, he's been sprayed by skunks four times. She attributes more skunk encounters, and other wildlife visits, to housing developments expanding into rural areas.

"It's because of all the development going on," says Weber, who lives in Fresno County, outside of Clovis. The animals are "coming toward us. We live on three acres, and they're coming toward us."

With mating season going on now for some skunks, the pungent odor they release maybe even more noticeable. But if you heed the warning signs, you can avoid any unpleasant sprays.

Two skunks found in California are the striped and spotted skunks. According to a publication on skunks by the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, "The striped skunk is about the size of an adult house cat and its fur is mostly black with white on top of the head and neck.

Diet plan for baby jumbo

MALACCA: Elephant calves generally drink their mothers milk for up to two years or more, but being an orphan, three-month-old Amid will grow up on cow's milk powder and bread at the zoo here.

Orphaned baby elephants are usually nursed by other lactating female elephants in the herd but Amid has lost not only his mother but his entire herd.

We have female elephants in the zoo but none of them are lactating. Even if they were, they might not accept Amid because he is not from their herd.

Beer, and the biochemists behind it

It was none other than Benjamin Franklin who said: "Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." But for such a revered drink, the steps to making beer are actually quite basic -- simply bottle (or can) the alcoholic fermentation that occurs when yeast is introduced to extracts of malted grain. Still, scientists throughout the ages have spent countless hours tweaking this general formula, communicating their achievements via media ranging from ancient funerary art to this week's lecture on the science of beer at the New York Academy of Sciences. Beer has been around for at least 8,000 years, making brewing quite possibly the world's oldest biotechnology. Archaeologists have scraped beer deposits from ancient Egyptian brewing jars, historians recount how everyone from Pharaoh to farmer drank, and beer was a common offering to the Egyptian Gods.

Kitchen Mailbox: How to deep-fry perfect fish

Deep frying fish is messy and not the most healthy way to eat fish. But once in a while...

Today's recipe was sent by Helen Lamison of Carnegie in response to a request from Stephen Hika of Cadogan, Armstrong County. Mr. Hika was searching for a seasoned, beer-battered fish recipe that can be used with various fish.

We used cod for its mild flavor and firm meat.

The recipe calls for quarter teaspoon of hot pepper sauce. We made a batch of fish with the hot sauce and one without. Our taste testers gave both versions a thumbs up.

Here are a few tips on deep frying:

Fish deep-fries quickly. When the coating is brown, it's likely the fish is done.

Do not heat oil until it smokes -- that's a sign the oil is breaking down, which affects the flavor.

Fry in small batches.
