Coca-Cola and Kraft Foods Team with Boys and Girls Clubs To Create ...

ATLANTA - Studies by Arizona State University1 have shown that healthy habits are modeled and reinforced at home; yet many of todays parents often lack the time and resources needed to help their children make constructive choices. To help battle this challenge, Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), along with partners The Coca-Cola Company and Kraft Foods are making available free of charge the Triple Play Parents Game Plan, a parents guide to encourage young people to better understand nutrition, get them active and teach them to get along better in social and recreational situations.

Developed specifically for home use by parents everywhere, content for the Triple Play Parents Game Plan was adapted from BGCAs successful program called Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul which takes a holistic approach to positively influence a childs wellbeing.

How to know if your product's been recalled

Over the past few months, there have been widely publicized product recalls for common grocery items. Hundreds of consumers have become terribly ill after eating contaminated food - some have even died. Recent recalls of some of my favorite foods included fresh spinach, cantaloupe, grilled chicken and peanut butter. The media does a good job of publicizing the specific details of recalled products so that anyone paying attention to the news will know what to avoid. When Peter Pan peanut butter was recalled, our local newspaper printed the product code on the front page and I was able to quickly identify that yes, I had a jar on my shelf. However, I was curious how shoppers could seek out information about current product recalls to make sure we haven't missed any news releases. I found some wonderful resources that can help all of us stay informed about product recalls and potential health risks.Phil Lempert of www.supermarketguru.com has a very comprehensive section on his Web site with more than 30 links to food safety Web sites.

When Wanda Carwile tried to decide which Paula Deen dish to make and share at a recipe lunch, she was overwhelmed with options.

Thats because Deen, who originally started the Bag Lady catering business in Savannah, Ga., moved into home-style bag lunches and then to a popular restaurant, The Lady & Sons. She followed that success with a succession of cookbooks, a magazine and a television show on the Food Network.

Carwile couldnt make up her mind, but she finally decided to combine two recipes for one large, colorful platter. Her combination impressed the several dozen women attending this Deen recipe fest at Crawford Gifts on the square in Athens.

It was no ordinary meatloaf, and thats why Carwile selected it.

This Cheeseburger Meatloaf and Sauce doesnt include regular ingredients like eggs or tomato paste, she said.

Keeping creatures warm

Thats the number one winter warning the Copper Country Humane Society has for local pet owners.

Animal cruelty is a year-round problem, but winter brings its own host of particular problems, said Lindsay Clouthier of the CCHS.

Unfortunately in the state of Michigan, there is no law that says you cant keep your dogs outside 24/7, she said.

The CCHS said animals are prone to frostbite, hypothermia, poisoning and dehydration from winter-related issues if owners dont take proper precautions.

Dr. Jack Rauch of the Negaunee Veterinarian Clinic said they see animals in the winter that have suffered frostbite on the ears and foot pads. A symptom of frostbite is that the ears will turn white, he said.

Also, they wont be warm, but cool to the touch, he said.

Live food, live bodies

I'll never forget one day, about five years ago, when for lack of anything else to do, I went with a friend to an organic farm over in Driggs, Idaho, for the day and helped picked vegetables. This farm distributed vegetables during the summer to local Teton Valley residents. I remember so vividly the brilliance of the sun, the purity of the air and the almost electrical energy of the land. I expected to drudge through the day tired, hot and dehydrated, but it was not so.

There was a very real energy and intensity in the environment. Mid-morning I plucked a carrot out of the ground, rinsed it off, and took a few bites. After a few bites I felt this incredible energy and radiance from the carrot. It tasted like the sun and the earth and was amazingly delicious, really unlike any carrot I've ever tasted before.
