Getting New Food Guide as Easy as Going to Store

In an effort to help the residents of Middlesex-London better plan nutritious meals and eat healthy foods, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is making it easy to get a copy of Canada's new food guide. The Heath Unit has obtained 60,000 copies of Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide, and is making the booklets available at supermarkets across the county and the city.

"The new food guide is a very useful tool when it comes to planning nutritious meals and ensuring that you get the nutrients you need to be healthy," says Heather Thomas, Public Health Dietitian with the Middlesex-London Health Unit. "We felt it was important to find a simple way to get this booklet into as many hands as possible - making it available when you're stocking up on groceries was a natural fit."

Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide is also available for download on Health Canada's website or by calling 1-800-O-Canada.

It's not just the food, it's also how you prepare it

"I try not to boil all the vitamins out of my vegetables, and look to buy organic dairy products because I think they are better for my kids," says Cathy Wickenhaisser, of Oxford.

We all know that nutrition and exercise are the keys to shaping up, so when I counsel people on eating the right food, I talk about how best to prepare it.

First, look at your top nutrient-dense vegetables. Winning the "most likely to boil" category, we have broccoli, carrots and spinach. All three can be lightly steamed, and the steam will slightly break down their fiber to release the highest amount of nutrients. Peas, collard greens, kale, brussels sprouts, cauliflower and green beans can also be lightly steamed.

Then, of course, you have salad makings like lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots.

GET BUZZED: First lady visits Rachael

Success may be the sweetest revenge, but having the first lady spontaneously appear on your afternoon talk show has to be worth something too.

Talk show host/Food Network cook Rachael Ray has had to contend with plenty of online haters who spend way too much time dishing about the 38-year-old for every move she makes.

So you had to cheer when her self-titled show was renewed through the 2009-2010 season.

And there was a bit of poetic justice when the Oxford American College Dictionary announced it would add the term EVOO one of Rays oft-criticized catchphrases, short for extra virgin olive oil to its 2007 edition.

But the latest sign of the perky TV personalitys success was an unexpected visit by first lady Laura Bush during yesterdays talk show.

France targets 'le snack' in obesity battle

Even in a country renowned for its exquisite food and adhesion to regular meal times, there has been no escape from "le snacking" and the rise of obesity.

The French are now consuming so much fat, salt and sugar that all advertisements for products considered unhealthy will, from today, be accompanied by health warnings.

They will accompany publicity in newspapers and magazines, on television and radio and online.

Menu-labeling bill served to Council

Shocked by the growing number of fat children in Philadelphia, City Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown yesterday introduced a menu-labeling bill that would require chain restaurants to list fat, carbs, calorie and sodium content of food offerings.

The idea is that knowledge will equal power for kids and, perhaps more importantly, parents.

"Menu labeling will help consumers make informed choices and would encourage restaurants to offer more nutritious choices," she told her colleagues.

Coming on the heels of new laws banning smoking in restaurants and bars and a ban on trans fat, City Council is taking on a more activist role in defense of the public's health.

But Brown's bill is aimed at a small part of the city's restaurant industry - only chains that have 10 or more locations, in or out of the city, and do business under the same name.

Odds and Ends: Problems with DVI-to-DVI output for MacBook (13 ...

Problems with DVI-to-DVI output for MacBook (13") MacFixIt reader Krzysztof Maj reports an issue where his MacBook (13") fails to generate proper display output when connected via a straight DVI connection. Oddly, the system does generate proper output when connected via DVI-to-VGA setup.

Krzyztof writes:

"This is a strange thing, because when I connect my Macbook to that monitor via VGA (mini DVI to VGA adapter and regular VGA cable) I can reach maximum 1440x900 fine. But when I use DVI in the same way I used to with the VGA adapter, the only maximum resolution is 800x600 in mirror mode. When I switch to 1024x768 my screen on the Samsung LCD monitor starting flicker and is not stable anymore. Higher resolutions result in a black screen."

If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know, noting your display model.
