Kraft Hopes to Take a Bite of Take-Out and HJ Heinz’s Earnings Preview

City of Industry, CA --(www.FinancialNewsUSA.com)-- 02/27/2007 - Consumer Goods industry news provided by Financial News USA (OTC: FNWU). Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE:KFT), looking for a way to end a prolonged sales slump, is trying to take a bite out of its real competition -- restaurants. As the world's second largest food and Beverage Company, Kraft Foods has pioneered everything from sliced processed cheese to packaged stuffing. But as more families forego the time-honored yet time-consuming homemade dinner for the ease and convenience of take-out, Kraft and other food companies have struggled to stay on the forefront of consumers' tastes. PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE:PEP) reaffirmed on Thursday its 2007 earnings forecast of at least $3.30 per share. The company also said it still expects mid-single digit growth in net revenue and volume, according to a filing with the U.S.

Puttin’ On The Ritz

This is an hotel immortalised by the 1930\'s Irving Berlin song, ‘Puttin\' on the Ritz ‘ and F. Scott Fitzgerald\'s short story, ‘The Diamond as big as the Ritz ‘, whose name has even become part of the English language. ‘Ritzy ‘ is described in the august Oxford Dictionary as ‘high class, luxurious, ostentatiously smart'.

Anyone visiting or staying in the hotel today will confirm that it is certainly all of these things. In fact, unless you are a millionaire, movie star, pop idol or just plain royalty, then the opulence of this ultimate palace hotel and the steely gaze of the towering doorman as you walk towards the revolving doors can actually be a little overwhelming and intimidating.

Opened in 1906, The Ritz celebrated its centenary anniversary last year.

Seminar to stress the importance of eating well

The Lake Agassiz Sustainable Farming Association (SFA) and Northwest Regional Sustainable Development Partnership (NWRSDP) are joining up to put on a one-day seminar about the importance of eating well: "Diet as the Ultimate Key to Vibrant Health and Healing".This event will be held Thursday, March 1, in Bede Ballroom of the Student Center on the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus from 8 to 3 p.m. The conference is open to the public and costs $20 per person, which includes a lunch of organically-grown foods.Bill Langlois, president of the SFA Chapter says, "This is all about gaining knowledge about what is good for you and what is not. I hope that what the attendants learn will help when their shopping in the grocery store, so they know what they are looking for and the importance of good health."

Egging on Benedict

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH IS RUNning late. I'm in a café in a cinema on the edge of Soho waiting to interview the up-and-coming actor, but according to his publicist, he's having trouble finding a parking space for his motorbike. "Actually, it's just a little moped," confesses Cumberbatch when he arrives 30 minutes later, full of apologies. "It's not a crazy souped-up thing. I'd love one of those but I only learned to ride about a year ago and - I know this is going to sound really show-offy - I haven't had time to get a proper licence because I haven't had a full week off when I know for certain I won't be needed for anything."

Cumberbatch doesn't sound "show-offy" at all, just honest. Right now, the 29-year-old is one of Britain's most in-demand young actors. If his face isn't immediately familiar, anyone who caught the BBC's much-fêted drama, Hawking, will recall his startling performance as the young Cambridge cosmologist coping with the onset of motor-neuron disease.

Traditional Chinese Medicine under Fire in China

As fundamental in Chinese culture as the Great Wall and dim sum, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) — with its acupuncture needles and herbal remedies — seems to have been around forever, and always will be.

Or will it?

As reported in The Boston Globe, a philosophy professor at a regional university in China launched a controversy in October with an online petition calling to oust Traditional Chinese Medicine from the national medical system. Four days later he had 10,000 signatures.

Ironically, at a time when more Chinese begin to view their traditions as old-fashioned, increasing numbers of Australians, Europeans and Americans are turning toward holistic medicine as a complement or alternative to the often impersonal, drug-obsessed nature of Western health care.

Woof, woof on some pet themes

A Budget isn't just a statement on what the government intends to tax and spend. It's also a scorecard on the success of lobbyists in influencing these decisions. And the real contest is not in the big decisions which the Finance Minister announces in his speech, but all the small ones he doesn't mention or just brushes over, which are buried deep in the explanatory notes to the Budget. This year's big winner is clearly the umbrella industry. Climatologists might be predicting less rain, but you wouldn't know it from the abandon with which the FM has showered both customs and excise relief on umbrellas. Then again, since he specifically mentions sun umbrellas, perhaps he's really thinking ahead — and of his upper class Tamilian lady constituents who wouldn't dream of stepping into the sun without an umbrella.

A hedonistic dish worth the indulgence

Years ago, when I started to drink wine, white Burgundy was my first big love affair. Because I was, and still am, a food and wine hedonist, I indulged my passion. (California Chardonnay was not yet on my radar screen, and the boom in planting this grape all over the state was in its early stages.)

Of course, in those halcyon days, I could afford to buy a lot of white Burgundy. Now I look at the prices, shake my head ruefully, and buy a good deal less. It is the smallest section of my wine cellar and, believe me, this is not for lack of desire.

Chardonnay is the major grape in white Burgundy, but it is treated differently than in California. Even with the diversity of styles in California Chardonnays, you would never mistake them for white Burgundy. Terroir and weather are major factors in white Burgundy's taste profile, as are winemaking methods.

It's alive with species, some arriving even as others prepare to ...

The first warm days of early spring can make Morro Bay seem like one of the most treasured spots on earth. That's because it is.

Miles of sheltered water provide one of America's best settings for sea kayaking and canoeing, including for those who never dreamed they'd get on the water with a paddle. All you need to do is show up. It's easy and euphoric, and the setting is gorgeous.

My favorite trip here is to take a few hours and paddle through the Morro Bay wildlife reserve and seabird sanctuary. Amid silent strokes, best shared with a mate, child or close friend, you paddle amid a gorgeous setting, with water views of the estuary and sanctuary, and Morro Rock in the distance looming as the region's signature landmark.

Sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, night herons, brown pelicans, gulls and many other seabirds are common sightings, with more than 100 species of birds documented.
