Whole Foods Market set to open at end of next month

Whole Foods Market has announced March 29 as the opening date of its much-delayed location on E. Houston St. between Bowery and Chrystie St., beneath the Avalon Chrystie Place apartment complex. The Lower East Side store, originally scheduled to open in 2006, will be more than 80,000 square feet and will employ more than 650 workers.

In addition to the natural and organic foods the chain is known for, the store will also feature a culinary center, natural cotton clothing and a line of body products. But, much to the relief of many nearby small businesses, it will not be selling alcohol.

Whole Foods was planning to open a wine store in conjunction with its Lower East Side location, but the State Liquor Authority has twice unanimously voted against its application for a liquor license.

Template for success

Though the types of businesses vary greatly, local business owners who have been successful at it all seemed to follow a template for success.

• Know the business

Though each of the small business owners came by it differently, all had a solid understanding of the business they started before diving in.

For Eric Larsen, owner of Ben Franklin in Fergus Falls, operating craft stores was a family business, starting with his great-grandfather's store in Kindred, N.D. Larsen had worked at his father's stores throughout high school, and managed a Ben Franklin in Fargo for four years before opening the Fergus Falls store in 1984.

“You have to have some background," Larsen said. “I'd hate to start a restaurant, for example, without any knowledge of the business."

Eat, Drink and Be Merry

Before I arrived at the 2007 South Beach Wine and Food Festival, I had envisioned drinking wine with celebrities, trying elegant dishes and watching the sun rise on the beach.

My expectations were more than fulfilled when I found myself chatting it up with Al Roker, sipping Dom Perignon and tasting tuna tartar (which I had never tried before) right on balmy South Beach, instead of shivering while eating a hot dog walking down an icy New York City sidewalk.

I was already familiar with South Beach, but this gala, four-day culinary affair -- now in its sixth year -- was Miami like I'd never seen it before.

'Wife Swap' topic of conversation

A Springboro family made the decision to join hundreds of other people who have created acting careers by taking part in Hollywood's reality games.

This time two mothers travel 800 miles to take over the female lead in another family for a short time.

One, a self-proclaimed, proud to be "princess", the other an over-extended mom who barely has time to sleep while taking care of her family.

Right off the bat, the television story explains the father from Springboro, Tim Hamilton does most of the work in the house, allowing his wife and daughter to be pampered; while the mother, Anita Lowe living in the mountains of Pennsylvania, does everything for her family and her pampered husband. The Springboro family plays with rhinestones and feather boas.

Cook with kids

Cookbooks aimed at children and their parents have become a growing publishing niche. Here's a selection of the latest:

• In the "Green Eggs and Ham Cookbook" by Georgeanne Brennan (Random House; $16.95), you'll go lots of places. Inspired by the words of Dr. Seuss, kids will have fun making Cat in the Hat Tub Cake (a pre-bought angel food cake that you decorate with whipped cream and berries), Jed's Bed of Shrimp (deep-fried coconut shrimp) and Daisy-Head Mayzie Burgers. Many of the recipes, such as Gertrude McFuzz-y Berries and Silly Sammy Slick Sodas, require no chopping, cooking or appliances, so kids can make them with minimal supervision. For those who want to relive the days of "Sam I Am," follow the recipe for ham covered in cilantro and parsley with a fried egg covered in guacamole.
