Nearly 200 register for 'Detox'

Several island residents are turning their attention to healthy living this weekend, as the popular dietary cleansing program "The 21-Day Detox" is back by popular demand. Last year about 170 residents participated in the program, which is held over three successive Sundays, making for the largest single group of participants ever to make the conscious choice to improve the quality of their lives by removing unwanted irritants and harmful pollutants from their systems.Detox facilitator Dr. Richard DeAndrea is back to educate those enrollees, and says they can expect a lot from participating. "The first week of the detox, basically a person is gong to learn to be on a vegetarian diet - no animal products. The second week, they're going to eat food that is not cooked, so it's going to be raw or live food, just the way Mother Nature created it.

Joining new, traditional African cuisines

Most of us in the West know little about Africa but what the daily headlines tell us. And most of those headlines tell bleak tales of endless war, grinding poverty and horrible disease.

But to Marcus Samuelsson, the highly-lauded chef and part-owner of Aquavit Restaurant in New York City, Africa is the culturally diverse and gastronomically vibrant place of his birth.

Samuelsson was born in Ethiopia but, when he was three years old, his mother died in a tuberculosis epidemic. He and his sister were adopted by a Swedish family who gave the siblings not only their new names but also an idyllic childhood that included a grandmother who was a professional cook. That early influence set him on the road to a culinary career and eventually to New York, where his dazzling turn in the Aquavit kitchen earned him numerous awards and glowing reviews.

Creature comfort for those in need

Many people who often don't have two nickels to rub together somehow find a way to own a dog.

Powerful evidence comes from Crossroads Community Services, a charity of First Methodist Church of Dallas that lately has begun to hand out free pet food to city residents whose incomes are generally well below the poverty line.

The cat food is hardly gathering dust, but the dog food goes out as fast as it comes in.

Grateful recipients of bags of Science Diet and other name brands include Orville Leigh, 59, who lives in East Dallas with his wife and a Siberian Husky named Crazy Horse.

"He's like one of our kids," said Mr. Leigh, who estimated his annual income at $12,000, much of it from Social Security disability.

Crossroads formed a partnership earlier this year with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas.

R15 feels like home

Picture this, you walk though a beautiful patio which takes you to two large double doors. You enter a large space that is intimately lighted with what appears to be red shot glasses on the ceiling. Warm colors such as red and yellow surround you. Large plasma televisions hang above your head and appetizing smells fill your nostrils. This may be your future home, but it's actually your local downtown bar, R15.

The name completely gives away this fabulous location that is the R15 Bar at night and Caf Bernardo by day, and home is exactly the feel that it's going for. This bar/caf is located in the heart of downtown right next to Empire nightclub. It opened Sep. 8 of 2006.

The large building is divided into three sections. When entering you immediately face the bar, which is the center and main attraction.

San Leandro Police Reports

Police were dispatched to Lake Chabot Road around midnight last Thursday in regards to a vehicle stopped on the shoulder.

The driver appeared to have been drinking but told police she had made a wrong turn and had gotten lost. The driver admitted to drinking two beers and was slurring her speech. Officers arrested the unsteady driver, whose blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit, and transported her to jail.

Tylenol Heist
Last Wednesday afternoon a manager at the Longs Drugs on the 1100 block of East 14th Street saw a man in an aisle carrying five boxes of Tylenol. After refusing help, the manager walked away but watched the man crouched in the corner concealing the Tylenol.

After the man walked away, the manager spotted a black plastic bag lying on the floor.

Try rich, healthful Mediterranean yogurt

There are some foods I've grown up eating that I still enjoy. But I use them in different ways. For example, I've been eating yogurt since I was a kid. Back then it was really sweet, synthetically flavored and colored. It was creamy like pudding, and there was most likely no active cultures in it.
