| Eat To Live: Are food agencies healthy?
WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Remember the contaminated spinach health scare? How many of you are still suspicious enough of the stuff that you haven't gone back to buying it? Another incident has so far involved more than 300 people in 39 states who got salmonella poisoning from Peter Pan peanut butter and Wal-Mart's Great Value brand. The warning affects jars with the product code 2111, manufactured at ConAgra's Sylvester, Ga., plant. If we relied more on local producers we could look in the eye while buying their wares, chances are we would be less in danger of falling sick from food. (Of course, it would mean giving up peanut butter unless you made your own -- not hard with a batch of peanuts in their shells, a food processor and some nimble-fingered children, but time consuming).

I know a lot about gaining and losing weight and have spent much of my life trying to diet. Ive had some successes, but, in time, I usually put most of what Ive lost back on. Thats because I like to eat and associate good food with fun and good times. About two years ago, I decided to try to follow a friends example and change some of my eating habits. I also started walking about two miles a day. I was beginning to take off some pounds. Then my doctors told me I had either suffered two mini strokes or two spasms that kept the blood from circulating to my brain. Either way, it frightened me. When I was able, I started to walk again and chose food that was fat free or low in fat and cholesterol. My weight continued to go down but has held pretty steady for at least a year.

YOUR WHOLE PET Real food for dogs is easier than you think
Although you may eat nearly every meal at the greasy spoon near your office or live on microwaved Lean Cuisine and Diet Coke, you at least know what you should be eating: a varied, balanced diet of fresh foods, with a minimum of processed, packaged convenience items. But that's you. You're a mammal with two legs and opposable thumbs -- and therefore must have completely different nutritional requirements from mammals with, say, four legs and an amazingly sensitive nose, right? It is fantastic to see the increase in availability of all types of food in our local towns and areas.
