Movie Review: Black Snake Moan (Film)

How do you follow an Oscar-nominated film about a pimp turned rapper? Why you make a film, Black Snake Moan (Paramount Classics) about a white girl chained up by a black man in the South, of course Beyond this salacious setup-and the playfully inflammatory marketingdirector Craig Brewer proves there's more than one hit to his wonder.

"I don't love you no mo'." Ouch. Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson) finds himself a cuckolded husband by himself for the first time in years on his remote, smalltown Tennessee farm. Rae (Christina Ricci) finds herself alone after her soulmate Ronnie (Justin Timberlake) goes off for the military. But Rae "got an itch" as a barely functioning nymphomaniac who, when she's not coughing up a lung due to some undiagnosed sickness, is self-medicating through sensuality.

Nice, hot chowders

According to “The New Food Lover's Companion," chowder is “A thick, chunky seafood soup, of which clam chowder is the most well known. The name comes from the French chaudière, a caldron in which fishermen made their stews fresh from the sea."

Kate Houchins (Andy's little sister) is an excellent cook. She lives over in Missouri and when we all met this last Christmas she promised me a chowder recipe.

Kate says: “I was in a chowder mood and modified a couple of recipes to fit my palate (I'm not overly fond of really thick clam chowder)." Kate and her guy Dan love garlic, so Kate dry-roasted a whole pod of garlic in a toaster oven until soft (15 min. at 350 degrees). She also says you can cook your own potatoes instead of using canned. Thanks Kate!

Angel Food Ministries helps feed the family

Spend $25 before Feb. 11 at any of four local churches, and you can collect between $50 and $65 worth of groceries Saturday, Feb. 24.

Sound too good to be true? Not this time.

The churches, First United Methodist Church, Kingsbury Baptist Church, Second Baptist Church and Living Waters Worship Center, are participating with Angel Food Ministries, an 11-year-old, Georgia-based, non-denominational outreach program, which provides food to more than half a million families each month in 32 states.

The program is coordinated in this region by Pastor Lynn Beams of Prevailing Word Church in Lytle, who acknowledged that Angel Food Ministries offer might not be believable to those new to the program and its work.

The first thing people think when they see that much for that little is that theres got to be something wrong with it, and thats just not the case, Beams said.

Checkers fast food chain distibutes take-out bags designed as ...

TAMPA, Fla. - Animal control authorities are not amused by a fast food chain's marketing stunt encouraging customers to dress their cats in a special take out bag.

Tampa-based Checkers Drive-in Restaurants Inc. is distributing "Rapcat" bags designed with cutaway areas for the cat's legs and tail. The cat's head sticks out the opening of the bag, which is designed to look like a basketball jersey and gold chain worn by the hip-hop Rapcat puppet in Checkers commercials.

A Hillsborough County Animal Services news release on Monday said forcing a real, unwilling cat into a "Rapcat" bag could be considered felony animal cruelty. The bag's warning - "not all cats will be down with wearing this bag. Do not harm or endanger any cat" - is not enough, the agency said.

"We have no ill will toward Checkers or Rapcat as a character," said animal services spokeswoman Marti Ryan.

Banks County man joins peanut butter lawsuit

The suit was filed against ConAgra Foods, Inc., the manufacturer of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter that has been linked to a salmonella outbreak that has affected people in 39 states. All of the peanut butter in question was produced at ConAgra’s factory in Sylvester, Georgia, which is under investigation by the FDA.

Prince Charles never had a Big Mac attack?

Prince Charles suggested Tuesday during a visit to the United Arab Emirates that banning McDonald's fast food was crucial for improving people's diets, a British news agency reported. A McDonald's spokeswoman said other members of his family "have probably got a more up-to-date picture of us," alluding to reports that Charles' son, Prince Harry, was spotted eating a chicken sandwich at McDonald's in 2005.
