Bourdain's Dream Iron Chef Matchups

Anthony Bourdain, who has taken to guest-blogging for Michael Ruhlman, has already offered his opinions on Top Chef contestants. Now, he's on to bigger and better targets -- the personalities on the Food Network. He admits to watching it, "I find myself riveted by its awfulness, like watching a multi-car accident in slow motion," and has plenty to say about those who grace its airwaves. Emeril: "I STILL find him unwatchable." Giada: "Food Net seems more interested in her enormous head (big head equals big ratings. Really!) and her cleavage--than the fact that she's likeable, knows what she's doing in an Italian kitchen--and makes food you'd actually want to eat." Rachel Ray: "She's a friendly, familiar face who appears regularly on our screens to tell us that '[e]ven your dumb, lazy ass can cook this!'" Sandra Lee: "Pure evil.

Nutrionists dismiss Prince's burger wish

The Prince of Wales believes that banning McDonald's could improve health and fitness levels. But nutritionists tell Health Editor Madeleine Brindley the occasional burger can still be part of a healthy diet.

NUTRITIONISTS last night said burgers and other fast foods only become a problem when they are a staple part of a person's diet.

And they said that banning foods that have been available for decades was "not practical".

The comments come after Prince Charles sparked a row about McDonald's food while on a visit to a diabetes centre in the Middle East.

The Prince, who produces his own range of organic foods, was touring the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

Andy's got his weight beaten - he's an ironman

Two years ago the 23-year-old weighed 104kg; now he is down to 74kg and was competing in his first Ironman competition in Taupo today.

Mr Bedford said he gained the extra kilograms while he was working in bars and clubs in Wellington.

A combination of drinking too much, always eating out and not exercising enough meant he was heavy - and low on energy.

However, when he moved back to Tauranga he decided enough was enough and a new lifestyle was born.

He started by eating better and stopped drinking. He also upped his exercise.

The spice road

THERE are places which have the power to change our lives for ever. For David Thompson, that place was Thailand, a country that ignited not only his love of the land and its people but also its cuisine.

Thompson is now acknowledged as a master in Thai cuisine and is the owner of Nahm restaurant in London, the only Thai restaurant in Europe ever given a Michelin star.

"I first visited Thailand 25 years ago and was seduced by the place straight away," he says. Thompson moved there, and under the tutelage of the wife of a high-ranking bureaucrat, he was made privy to the cooking techniques and ingredients that bore little resemblance to his classical French training. While he spent several months with her "pounding pastes with a mortar and pestle, sweating over woks and sneezing over curries", he found himself fascinated by the richness and history of Thai cuisine and began to collect and study "memorial books".
