Right recipes make for healthier habits

One of the great tools coming from Dietitians of Canada in time for Nutrition Month in March is a new cookbook entitled Simply Great Food (Robert Rose).

The book was compiled by dietitians Patricia Chuey, Mary Sue Waisman and chef Eileen Campbell.

Dietitians from across the country contributed recipes for delicious and nutritious home-cooked meals for every day of the week -- not only because healthy eating is good for you, but also because it has been proven that families who prepare and eat meals together have healthier eating habits. Business Owner Cooks Comfort Food For The Coast

Whether your definition of soul food is collard greens, cornbread or sweet potato pie, one Gulf Coast restaurant has it all.

While Reynolds Gumbo House is not laced with fancy tablecloths or fine china, the Gulf Coast eatery has what some may consider to be world class cuisine.

From banana pudding to corn bread, customers say it has all the soul food fixins.

"I think it's a heart food. That's the way you feel when you come in here. It's something that you get a little tingly feeling over," says customer Tim Wold.

Mary Reynolds is the brainchild behind the restaurant. Born in Vicksburg, the southern cook now calls South Mississippi home. But the owner says she'll never forget the story behind her success.

"Yes it was hard, but we grew our own vegetables and we worked in the fields and that's why I learned to cook because I was small and my mom she just left me home to do the cooking so that she didn't have to do it when she got home," says Reynolds.

Jada's Soul Food is Southern fare with a history

Call it Southern cooking, comfort food or soul food, it does more than nourish the body; it feeds the spirit with food made from family recipes passed down through the generations.

Such is the case at Jada's Soul Food, owned by Linda and Jackie Clash.

Jackie Clash's family is from Arkansas and he grew up in Chicago. Like many cooks, he grew up watching and learning from two gifted cooks (his mother and grandmother) as they prepared family meals. Linda Clash is Madison born and bred and handles the customer side of the operation. Together they prepare and serve "Southern cookin' with a difference you can taste," as the restaurant's sign states.

"Jackie's passion for cooking began when he was 5 years old. He learned all the basic recipes and builds on them," says Linda.

Is it soup yet?

Mom used to spend all day in the kitchen laboring over homemade soup. Between the boiling, deboning and cooling process to make the stock, and then finally cooking the concoction, it was a time-consuming and labor-intensive meal.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

"I make fast soups all the time and think you can get maximum flavor in 20 to 30 minutes," says Robin Miller, author of "Quick Fix Meals" (The Taunton Press; $18.95), her just-released seventh cookbook.

"You can make a fabulous soup with five or six good ingredients. You don't need a lot of ingredients when one or two are really strong.

"Soup is no different than any other meal in terms of time investment, and you get a tremendous payoff," says Miller, host of the Food Network's "Quick Fix Meals With Robin Miller."

You can do your own prep in advance or get some help from the grocery store with pre-chopped items from the salad bar or produce aisle (such as chopped onions, broccoli or cauliflowerettes; baby carrots; cut-up squash pieces and sliced mushrooms).

Woolworths' pet food contaminated

As a precaution, Woolworths has withdrawn all Woolworths branded dry dog and cat food from its shelves, due to concern that there is a small possibility that some customers' pets may be at risk from micro traces of a contaminant which has been identified in some batches of Woolworths labelled dry dog food.
