Iverson '05 experiences Japanese culture as JET teacher

Since August 2005, University of Minnesota, Morris graduate Becky Iverson 05 has been a participant in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET). The program, celebrating its 20th year, promotes grassroots international exchange at the community level by placing young graduates from over 44 different countries as English teaching assistants in schools throughout Japan. Iverson is in her second year of a two-year commitment. Through a question and answer session, Iverson, a native of Watertown, South Dakota, reflects on her experiences in Japan. Tell us about your work. As an assistant language teacher, I team-teach grades 7 to 12 English with a Japanese teacher at two high schools and a school for the deaf. I run an English club, judge speech competitions, run mock English college interviews, make presentations at JET conferences, and take sign language and Japanese classes.

Canine accounts

THIS may be the Year of the Fire Boar, but for me, the recent festive celebrations centred around dogs, rather than pigs. It seemed almost as if the outgoing Dog didnt want to take its final bow until it had left some indelible memories for me.

It all began on Feb 14, Valentines Day.

Newell Rubbermaid to Lease 407000 Square Foot Facility in ...

Atlanta-based Newell Rubbermaid recently sighed a 10-year, 407,612 square foot lease agreement on a facility at the Southern California Logistics Airport (SCLA), a master-planned 8,500-acre multimodal transportation hub supported by air, ground and rail connections in Victorville, Calif.

The build-to-suit bulk distribution facility for Newell Rubbermaid is the first of several warehouse and distribution buildings to be developed during Phase I construction at the logistics center. Phase I development is being supported through a $350 million investment from Stirling Capital Investments. Construction of the Newell Rubbermaid distribution building is expected to commence 1st quarter of 2007. The company anticipates moving into its new facility in September 2007, creating approximately 150 new jobs.

Fast-food restaurant receives a makeover

Renovation of the restaurant, located at 950 N. Wesleyan Blvd., began about a week ago, said Mike Parker, a superintendent for Tennessee-based Hudson Co., the company that builds and renovates the majority of McDonald's restaurants.

"This restaurant is getting a total reimage," he said. "We're adding extensions on the building, which will allow for extra parking, including spaces for the handicapped."

Parker said he hopes to complete the remodeling so the restaurant can reopen around March 15.

Seating will be increased at the restaurant, Parker said. An additional menu ordering station is being added for the restaurant's drive-through lanes, he said.
