It's best to start healthy habits young

Nate Bleszinski used to grab three cookies every time he passed the kitchen cabinets. At McDonald's, he'd order a quarter-pounder with cheese and a six-piece chicken-nugget meal. On pizza night, he might have four or five slices. He loved Cheese Nips and bagels, and when his mother, Marianne, cooked a well-balanced meal of chicken, rice and veggies, he'd eat mostly rice — and lots of it.

"I didn't think about it," says Nate, an 11-year-old from Glastonbury, Conn. And although many kids can eat this way and stay thin, Nate can't. As he got older, he began to talk about losing weight. He plays hockey, and he knew he could improve if he could skate a little faster.

Legislature might boost U organic research funding

The appropriation would create ongoing funding for new staff positions, graduate assistantships and equipment to research organic agriculture at the St. Paul campus, UMore Park and outreach centers in Lamberton, Waseca, Morris and Crookston.

Farmers might label crops and livestock organic if they meet certain conditions, such as avoiding the use of manmade herbicides, pesticides and growth hormones.

Rep. Ken Tschumper, DFL- La Crescent, authored the bill. He said the state has lagged behind on researching organic agriculture, even though the products are now on the mainstream market.

"This initiative will make the University of Minnesota a national and international leader in organic research and education," Tschumper said.

Most organic farmers rely on word of mouth for new information, he said.

Brazilians worst abusers of diet pills, UN says

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazilians are the world's worst abusers of diet pills and the biggest producers of two potentially dangerous weight-loss drugs, a study by the International Narcotics Control Board said on Thursday.

Per-capita consumption of diet drugs, or anorectics, is almost 40 percent higher in Brazil than in the United States, according to the INCB, which is in charge of implementing U.N. drug conventions.

The top five users, in order, were Brazil, Argentina, South Korea, the United States and Singapore.

"Anorectics are being used indiscriminately to feed the slimming obsession that affects some societies," INCB President Philip Emafo said in a statement. "Effective intervention by local competent authorities is a must."

Getting New Food Guide as Easy as Going to Store

In an effort to help the residents of Middlesex-London better plan nutritious meals and eat healthy foods, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is making it easy to get a copy of Canada's new food guide. The Heath Unit has obtained 60,000 copies of Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide, and is making the booklets available at supermarkets across the county and the city.

"The new food guide is a very useful tool when it comes to planning nutritious meals and ensuring that you get the nutrients you need to be healthy," says Heather Thomas, Public Health Dietitian with the Middlesex-London Health Unit. "We felt it was important to find a simple way to get this booklet into as many hands as possible - making it available when you're stocking up on groceries was a natural fit."

Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide is also available for download on Health Canada's website or by calling 1-800-O-Canada.

Riverbank's new Thai infusion

With the opening of Siam Fine Thai Cuisine in September, Wayne Luong completed a perfect Asian trifecta. Luong is a strong advocate for city business and dining, and this hip, upscale Thai venue on the west bank of the Genesee is a fine complement to his already successful tandem East End sushi and dim sum complex. Tucked into the left rear corner of the new Corn Hill Landing complex, it takes a bit of digging to unearth this gem. What you will find is three levels of bright but minimalist dining, with a bright but minimalist menu.

THE FOOD

The menu here is not as extensive as some Thai restaurants. There are about a dozen entres, but each can be varied by the additions of beef, chicken, shrimp, squid or tofu. While the selection may be limited, quality is not. As an example, jumbo shrimp were used in our entre as opposed to the medium variety used in many places.
